How You Can Help! There are many ways that individuals and groups can help to increase or replace greenspaces in our communities. One of the most effective is to push for legislation or regulations that require developers to leave greenspace buffer zones around future developments. These have a multitude of benefits to the community as a whole, a few of which are listed on benefits of greenspaces. If you are a member of a civic group or a church, you and your members can work together as partners to adopt a greenspace area in your neighborhood. Remember that special needs exist along roadways and creeks or rivers. Many people wish for roadsides or creekbeds to have a park-like appearance, but this encourages erosion and does little to stem the rising tide of pollutants in our communities. Additionally, park-like areas do very little to cut down on noise pollution, or calm traffic. Greenspaces should be as natural as possible. As a business or corporation, you can adopt an area in which greenspace reparation is needed. Tax-free deductions can be made to organizations who are willing to plant trees or shrubs in a newly landscaped area. Scout groups, civic clubs, and school groups are often excellent volunteers. Remember, non-source point pollution can and is cleaned up by natural greenspaces. Additionally, these greenspace areas absorb more rainwater, reducing runoff, and therefore cutting down tremendously on flooding. They also absorb pollutants that can cause cancer, lung disease, and upper respiratory ailments. For information on planting greenspaces, call us. We will help you, free of charge. There is no catch-only cleaner air and water, and a healthier environment for all of us to live in! |
